Students to Japan Women's University are encouraged to go in January for a 6 week, 3 hour per day, 4 days per week intensive language course from mid-January until early March. The first semester commences in early April and there is no language program prior to the second semester commencing in late September. Students live in homestay during the language course then in student dormitories for the semester period.

The Ministry of Justice has tightened regulations for students coming to Japan to study due to students coming with insufficient funds. Students now need to state how they will finance their studies and may require proof. A recommended budget is about ¥150,000 per month (about A$1,800) and about ¥30-50,000 per semester (about A$370–620) on textbooks.
